Hey all,
So Tyler passed this poem along to me, and I thought it was applicable to us all as we are all establishing the foundation for the Councils to come....
THE BRIDGE BUILDER
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
That sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

And how exactly is it applicable?
ReplyDeleteGlad you asked, Tyler:) haha Seriously though, it is applicable because we have been discussing Pay It Forward and how you can never pay back those completely who have helped you along the way; however, you can leave the path better for those to come. I believe that is what we are all doing; I feel that we are all passionate about Greek Life b/c we all have gotten so much from it--best friends, experiences, etc. So in return we want others to have similar experiences. One of the reasons why I wanted to serve as PHA President is b/c I wanted to make a difference, and I wanted to inspire others to be better Greeks, better people. I feel like that was what the old man was doing his time was coming to an end, but he wanted to leave the world a better place, and he did. Similar to the man, many of us our graduating soon... We all can leave our councils, our community a better place just like the man in the story:)
